This section will tell you in a very broad way about how to use this site. More details appear in other chapters.
This is a "Content Management System" or CMS for short. In contrast to the usual web site where the pages are fairly static and must be changed by a webmaster, the CMS is truly designed for managing the content and to enable a community of users to contribute content.
What's content? Just look at the menu across the top of the page. Each of those is a link to a type of content. The best way to check it out is to let your mouse do the walking and you do some clicking. And management of the content is shared in an interactive manner.
Most content has the ability for comments to be made to the item and even comments to the comments. That could get out of hand in a hurry! In addition to discussing items via comments you, the user, can also add content.
But part of content "management" is in being able to know what is there. This is accomplished in several ways. One is to use the SEARCH box (upper right corner of the page). Just a few relevant words (no booleans) will usually find what you are looking for.
Another way to know about content is to turn on the "notification" function. When you sign up for this site you will have received an email that suggested that that you turn on the my notify settings under your user account which gives you an email every time new content is posted. But see the following paragraph.
Additionally, if you are a subscriber to the Family email list1 you will automatically see the results of the "my notify" process. It has been set up so that the email list itself is a member (artificially so) of this CMS site and it gets all notifications, and they are emailed out to each list member. Thus, if you are a member of that email list you probably don't need to turn on your individual notification.
