More about content and what it is

site.admin's picture

The term "content" merely refers to "stuff" that's on the website and may have been placed there by either the webmaster or one or more of the registered users. Only registered users may add content.

If you click on the "create content" link in the left column you'll see the following which explains a bit about what each type of content is all about.

  • book page
A book is a collaborative writing effort: users can collaborate writing the pages of the book, positioning the pages in the right order, and reviewing or modifying pages previously written. So when you have some information to share or when you read a page of the book and you didn't like it, or if you think a certain page could have been written better, you can do something about it.
    • And when you are reading in a book (such as the document you are now reading), a table of contents automatically appears in the left column. Take a look now.
  • forum topic
A forum is a threaded discussion, enabling users to communicate about a particular topic.
  • group
A group provides home page for like minded users. There they post articles about their shared interest.
    • A family group has been created for the purpose of restricting certain items of content to be viewed only by family members.
  • mail
A mail post can be sent to users of selected roles.
    • Note: only the webmaster or designated moderators can send mail.
    • You can contact a registered user by clicking on their name which will present a "contact" tab which will enable you to email them from this system IF they have permitted such contacts.
  • page
If you want to add a static page, like a contact page or an about page, use a "page" type of entry.
  • personal blog entry
A blog is a regularly updated journal or diary made up of individual posts shown in reversed chronological order. A blog is tightly coupled to the author so each user will have his 'own' blog.
  • poll
A poll is a multiple-choice question which visitors can vote on.
  • story
Stories are articles in their simplest form: they have a title, a teaser and a body, but can be extended by other modules. The teaser is part of the body too. Stories may be used as a personal blog or for news articles.
  • upload file
This will allow a user to upload files to the website for other users to download. This also allows additional information to be added such as version, author, long description and the website that the file originaly came from.
  • webform
A webform can be a questionnaires, contact or request forms. It can be used to let visitors make contact, register for a event or to enable a complex survey.
  • weblink
Weblinks allow you to link to other websites and pages.

More information on the Drupal modules can be found in the documentation on the Drupal site.  It's more than what most people will care to know, but may be of interest to our more nerdy cousins.
